BROW CHICA WOW WOW

Your facial expression communicates all your thoughts and feelings. Do you know how? Your brow says it all!

Yes, eyebrows give definition to a person’s expression. Without them, no one would recognise anyone or understand what anyone is saying. Most of us don’t realise the need to groom our brows. However, you couldn’t be more WRONG! It’s perhaps the simplest way to make a big difference in how you look. A great brow shaping technique can make you look younger, thinner, happier and sharper. It’s like an instant face-lift.

First let’s understand (if you haven’t already) how much your brows “should” mean to you. Renowned makeup artist, Anu Kaushik says, “As a makeup artist first thing I notice on a face is brows – too long, droopy or too arched, or too thin. Wrong brows can drag your face down while perfect shape can lift your face up. Brows are the frames of your face so it has to be perfect.” Let’s begin with learning about the best shape for the face type. Kaushik explains, “High arched brows work best on oval, round and square face type. On the other hand, long and heart shape faces look best with thick and not too arched brows. It helps maintain balance.”  Soft arches flatter narrow forehead and high arches compliment high cheekbones. Avoid thin and delicate brows if you have large eyes and steer clear of angular brows  if you have sharp, pointed features.

Having said that what about those who have naturally sparse eyebrows? Makeup guru, Chandni Singh suggests, “If you have thin growth you should apply castor oil on them to make them dense. Do not over pluck.” She adds, “If you have bushy brows apply a wax pencil on it to set hair in place and then apply eye shadow if need be. You can also keep at hand a transparent mascara and run the wand over your brows to stick unruly hair in place.”

Next, let’s talk brow colour. Is it important you ask? Of course! It should match or at least be close to your hair colour. For those who dare to sport tinted brows, the general rule to follow while choosing the best colour for you, is to go for the one that matches the deepest shade of your hair colour. However, if your deepest shade is black, go for a dark brown instead of black. It’s softer and more flattering. But ladies, be sure to get it done by a pro.

Just like our eyes, there are multiple tools to style our eyebrows with as well. Some we know, like eyebrow pencils or tweezers and few uncommon ones like eyebrow wigs and curlers. Let’s look at few tools you can add to your kit.

  • Brow Wax – It adds colour to help define your brows, locks unruly hair into place, and grooms your brows with a touch of shine. It comes in transparent as well as dark/light shades. You can try NYX Eye Brow Shaper Wax.
  • Brow Powder – It fills in sparse areas extends and defines your brow lines and holds the brow hair in place. Try Anastasia Eyebrow Powder Duo or Maybelline Ultra Brow Powder.
  • Brow Gel – A great brow gel adds in the wow factor. It adds a hint of colour and shine along with setting them the way you want. You can try M.A.C Brow Set Clear or Anastasia Clear Brow Gel.
  • Brow Highlighter – This tool also adds a glow of light and shimmer of shine beneath the brow to accentuate its shape- like an instant brow-lift. You can try Maybelline Define a Brow Eyebrow Pencil or Sephora Retractable Brow Pencil.

Expert tip: Singh suggests, “Fill your brows up with an eye shadow using an angular brush for a softer look and for a stronger look fill them with brow fillers in a gel/cream form.”

Some Dos and Don’ts:

For starters, when to go for a trim? Take the turtleneck test — grab a turtleneck, put it on, and then pull it off in front of a mirror. Do your brows scare you? Time for a trim. This is the smartest tip that we picked up from Raising Eyebrows by Cameron Tuttle. Here are some more tips that we have learnt from the experts in the industry.

  • When you have to tweeze, do it right after a hot shower, your pores are open then and it is easier to remove the hair(or use a warm washcloth to open the pores).
  • Always pull hair out in the same direction in which they grow to avoid breaking.
  • Do not get waxed if you have a sunburn or if you’ve recently been drinking alcohol as these make your skin highly sensitive. Actually, we’d suggest avoid waxing brows and stick to our traditional method of threading the brows.
  • Over plucking is a big NO as it can lead to infections and follicle damage.

So, are you ready to put your best brow forward?
