CHANNEL THE SHORT CROP

Short hairdos are here to stay and how! Inspired by the season’s on-trend look, we whittle down the pro ways of making the CUT.

Bobs, wobs, and super short crops are having a major moment; in fact, they are the way to rock this season. Be it on the red-carpet, on the celluloid or as streetstyle we tell you how to pull off the short hair look, especially pixies or bob.

Nostalgia is attached to pixies

As they say trends keep on recycling and one such look is pixie, which according to Manas Nigam, the owner of Kreations Unisex Salon is undoubtedly an edgy, daring cut. Declaring as the most-wanted style of this time around, he says, “A pixie cut is a short hairstyle worn by women, generally short on the back and layered on the sides of the head, and slightly longer on the top or spiky on the front. It has been worn by some of the biggest, boldest and the bravest stars throughout the history. Its popularity started in late ‘50s with Audrey Hepburn wearing this style in her debut film, Roman Holiday. Since then, it has been boldly adorned by many actresses and supermodels. Anne Hathaway is one such example and more recently Anushka Sharma in PK.”

Other Short Styles

While the pixies are the flavor of the month, we’re also drawing inspiration from other short styles sported by celebs like Priyanka Chopra, Sonakshi Sinha, Nargis Fakri, Dia Mirza, Sunidhi Chauhan, Akshara Hassan, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, Beyoncé and Jennifer Lawrence. However, the look that has us hooked is the uber-chic style that was channeled by Meryl Streep in her iconic role as Miranda Priestly in Devil Wears Prada. Bang on trend, oozing style and attitude, that a cut few can carry off with elan. So you ask what’s the requirement? We say – attitude, attitude and attitude and of course a cool hairstylist.

Nailing the look

Though short hair appears to be extremely casual and easy-to-maintain, but there are certain facts which need to be taken in consideration. Agreeing to the fact, Nigam adds, “For a short haircut, it’s fundamental to have a well-defined jaw line and cheek bones. People with square or round face should opt for a longer and more flattering cut. To add further dimension to the cut, work the hair with some styling equipments. Try using a hair dryer, brush, tong or a flat iron at-home; also wax or gel (like those from label.m styling range) can be used to achieve volume, curls or waves. Gel or hair spray can create a smoother look, while you go for spikes with a wax. A sea salt spray from label.m can help you to get a messy look.” The sexy, beachy look can also be aced with Kevin.Murphy hair styling products. From loose waves to natural curls to an asymmetrical finish, short hair can be versatile, as long as you have access to right (read compatible) hair products. We recommend L’Oréal Professionnel techni.art range, Wella Professionals’ Finish Stay Essential Finishing Spray and Toni&GuyTexturizing Hairspray.

Jewel in your crown

A short hair style can be given a boost of life and dimension when a few streaks of highlights are cleverly woven into the crop. “For Asian skin tone, it can be worn with blonde highlights as well as global warm brown colours,” says Nigam. That’s playing it safe. However, if you wish to dare, we’d suggest try complementing your dark mane with jeweled hues like streaks of ruby, emerald, sapphire or amethyst.
