DECODING HYALURONIC ACID

Is your beauty regime missing out on this ingredient? Dermatologist Dr Chiranjeev Chhabra explains why you need to add it to your skincare.

Retinol, vitamin C and hydrogen ions are some of the most popular active ingredients in the skincare industry, however the one that is ruling the charts is Hyaluronic Acid (HA). Almost every other skincare product has HA added in their ingredients list.

What is it?

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar complex, it is found naturally in our body and is now synthetically engineered to form a part of skincare products. It acts as a key ingredient for skin hydrating and anti-ageing treatments. HA is also one of the main components in fillers as well.

How does it actually benefits the skin?

Ageing causes our skin to lose the ability to preserve moisture, resulting in visible loss of elasticity and plumpness. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to replenish moisture that is crucial for achieving youthful and supple skin. It also revitalises skin’s outer layer so that it looks and feels softer, smoother, and visibly hydrated. It reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and adds a glow. The calming, hydrating and antioxidant properties of HA are good for all skin types including sensitive, blemish-prone or eczema-prone skin.

Hyaluronic acid is an important part of our skin and depletes as we age. With this the skin starts losing its volume and, becomes dull and dehydrated. HA works best when injected. Fillers like Juvederm and Restylane help in reducing fine lines and lifting the cheeks, volumising the sunken areas and moisturising the skin. They can also be used to create pouty lips and to give thin, wrinkled lips a fuller and younger appearance.

Few over-the-counter products infused with this powerful component.
