Latin Name: Mimulus guttatus
Description: Found naturally in the west of North America in damp places from sea level to over 3000m in the Rockies and other mountains, this plant was first imported to Britain from Chile as garden plants in 1826. Soon, like their cousins the monkey flower, they escaped from the tamed gardens to banks of brooks and streams in English countryside. Dr Bach found Mimulus ‘growing to perfection’ along the River Usk. He spoke of ‘crystal streams where the water is clear’- they are now a rarity in lowland Britain. Unfortunately, due to pollution, this sprightly plant is fast disappearing from some of its English habitat.
Myth: It is believed that if you’re gathering the courage to ask someone you’re smitten with to attend an event with you, then be sure to take two drops of Mimulus flower essence under the tongue.
Bach Flower Remedy: This flower essence discovered by Dr Edward Bach, is a remedy for known fears. The essence from this bright flower helps one regain faith and gives courage to do things that must be done. It is good for shy, timid and sensitive children who find it difficult to speak in company and may suffer from blushing or stammering.
Dr Bach wrote: “I want to make it as simple as this: ‘I am hungry, I will go and pull a lettuce from the garden for my tea; I am frightened and ill, I will take a dose of Mimulus’.” (As reported in The Medical Discoveries)
My experience: Mimulus has been specially helpful for me in situations where I have been avoiding saying or doing something that I have to because of my fear. Taking this remedy has almost always provided me with the wisdom to deal with the situation and gather the courage to take the appropriate action.
Direction of use: Take 2 drops in a cup of water/herbal tea and sip at intervals. It would be a great idea to sip on this water/tea and meditate on what you experience. Just observe your breath, mind and body after taking the remedy and note down your observations in a journal.
