Oscars 2023: A Historic Day for Indian Cinema

This year’s awards season at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Monday we can proudly say it was a significant moment for Indian filmmakers and audience. The reasons – The Elephant Whisperers, RRR’s song ‘Naatu Naatu and Deepika Padukone.

This year for the first time in the history of Oscars, India had 3 nominations. ‘Naatu Naatu’, the hit dance track from the film RRRAll That Breathes and The Elephant Whisperers. The Netflix documentary The Elephant Whisperers by Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga won in the Best Documentary Short Film category, which is the first ever Oscar for an Indian production. The Elephant Whisperers depicts an unbreakable bond between two abandoned elephants and their caretakers.

All That Breathes directed by Shaunak Sen, tells a story of two Muslim brothers who live in Delhi, and have made it their life’s sole goal and motive to save a dying breed of birds, black kites, who have been dying due to the toxic environment. Though the film didn’t win the award, but has won many hearts.

India made its presence felt when actress Deepika Padukone took over the stage to introduce the song ‘Naatu Naatu’s live performance. The rendition received a standing ovation.

Directed by SS Rajamouli starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, the film RRR earned international recognition with its original song ‘Naatu Naatu’. The foot-tapping number has created history by becoming the first Indian song to win the Best Original Song award at the Oscars. It had also won the award for the Best Original Song at the 80th Golden Globes. The song has a catchy tune but what blows one’s mind is the choreography. The dance moves are simply superb.
