OVERCOME SETBACKS IN 5 STEPS

Life is an unexpected series of twists and turns, which is capable of laying your best laid plans to waste. Here are five points you need to know in order to find your way back and start over.

No matter how careful we are in treading the path we have selected, there are bound to be constant setbacks at every corner. Be it major or minor, they exist in all aspects of life. It can be the small slip in your well-constructed diet plan, or the momentary break in the daily ‘morning-walk’ schedule as the warm bed seduced you into deep slumber. Extreme disappointment can arise from hitches in your five year career goals or the breakdown of a long term relationship. Things get difficult and mistakes happen frequently but one’s attitude determines his/her future.

It is not unusual for individuals to either, take impulsive decisions and give up on themselves or turn towards the dark lane of depression and isolation in such situations. But, there is always a choice to take the obstacles in a stride and keep moving ahead instead. These are the things you need to keep in mind to do so.

Accept

The first step would be to identify and accept your mistake. It is ordinary to feel disheartened when things don’t go as expected, but understand that this is not the end. A glitch in your aspirations doesn’t mean that all opportunities of success have snapped shut. While it may seem like a momentous failure at the moment, recognise the fact that this overwhelming period too shall come to pass. A few wrong decisions, no matter how painful, do not possess the ability to affect your entire existence. Accept this problem as what it is, a mere roadblock which can be crossed, and start over.

Appreciate

Acknowledge your efforts rather than simply criticising yourself for the mistakes. A person who always dwells on the negatives would mostly remain trapped under the multiple disappointments and find it harder to overcome them. Think back and analyse the strategies that worked and appreciate your struggles. Not everyone is capable of achieving what you have and thus being grateful is the huge step towards victory.

Learn

Mistakes are your best teachers and they are completely normal. Regretting the bad choices may seem like the easiest option but it doesn’t solve any of your problems. Use these errors to plan ahead for the next time. Examine what went wrong and learn about your weaknesses that prevented your success. Recognise these small slip-ups and turn them into resources, which can be immensely valuable for making decisions in the future.

Be positive

It is important to keep moving, but talking about your setbacks and those short term defeats is equally essential. To remain positive on your journey forward, avoid harbouring your frustrations regarding the past as that can hinder your progress. Rather than socialising virtually, make an effort to build back communication with people in your immediate environment and share your concerns with them. A nurturing community can motivate you when you face a problem and encourage when going gets tough.

Stop Comparing

However tempting it may be, break the vicious cycle of comparing your growth with the milestones of others. If your measure of success is based on the achievements of people around you, how will you be able to evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses? Constant competition translates to constant disappointments, which is rarely a healthy ingredient for absolute victory. Refrain from forming judgements about others without a deep understanding of their circumstances and keep your vision clear and ahead on your future.

It is alright to trip and fall sometimes. While the fall can be emotionally or physically hurting, it is not a marker of failure. So, breathe, spring back up and dust yourself because as celebrated author Mary Shelly once said, “The beginning is today”.
