Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani: A Vibrant Blend of Love, Laughter, and Social Commentary

What a Blast! It’s been a while since we’ve witnessed a high-energy, big-budget romantic film that’s simply a blast to watch. While action-packed movies and small-scale romantic comedies have graced the screens, the genre of big, exhilarating romances has been somewhat scarce. And guess what? This one comes with a sprinkle of drama to add that extra flair!

The true star of the show is Ranveer Singh. Alia Bhatt is undeniably fantastic, and Jaya Bachchan delivers an outstanding performance, but it’s Ranveer who takes the cake. His presence in the film is what sets the tone and makes everything click. Rocky is a character that demands a delicate balance – from being comical when required to becoming a relatable individual when the situation demands. Ranveer’s portrayal hits the mark, making Rocky both a laugh riot and a bundle of genuine enjoyment.

The movie bursts open with a star-studded dance number featuring Varun Dhawan, Sara Ali Khan, Janhvi Kapoor, and Ananya Pandey alongside Ranveer Singh. It’s a testament to the vibrant journey that awaits the audience. This family drama, while possessing the trademark extravagance and glamour of a Karan Johar creation, isn’t confined to mere spectacle. Beneath the glitz lies a gentle exploration of society’s deep-rooted problems such as gender bias, misogyny, body shaming, and the cancel culture. These themes are artfully interwoven into the narrative, neither overshadowing the story’s humour nor overpowering the screenplay’s attention.

The lead characters, Rocky and Rani, epitomize the clashing of cultures and personalities. Ranveer Singh’s portrayal of Rocky, a flamboyant young man eager to reconnect his amnesiac grandfather (Dharmendra) with a woman from his past, is a delightful balance of exuberance and sensitivity. Alia Bhatt’s Rani complements Rocky’s energy with her fiery self-assuredness, although her Bengali accent could have been more nuanced. The film skilfully delves into the judgments and biases people harbour toward one another, creating moments of melodrama and tears in true Karan Johar fashion.

The film’s musical enchantment is undeniable, highlighted by a medley of Bollywood classics beautifully intertwined with Rocky and Rani’s modern romance. Additionally, the movie winks at its own legacy, with self-references that will resonate with fans of Johar’s movies.

Ranveer Singh’s Rocky, moulded by societal conditioning, represents a bold take on the traditional Punjabi male. His journey from ignorance to enlightenment is peppered with witty one-liners delivered with his signature flair. Alia Bhatt’s Rani shines as a self-assured woman but falls slightly short in capturing the Bengali accent. Jaya Bachchan, playing the matriarch, displays her acting prowess, and Dharmendra’s impactful cameo adds depth. Shabana Azmi and the supporting cast contribute well-rounded performances.

The film’s visual appeal is captivating, thanks to Manush Nandan’s cinematography. While the story takes time to establish itself, the film picks up momentum in the second half. The climax may be predictable, but the humour and laughs persist. Amid the laughs, a subtle wind of change blows as Rocky’s parents seek Rani’s hand in marriage—a role reversal that signifies evolving norms.

Let’s not forget Alia Bhatt’s enchanting saree looks from vibrant patterns to elegant designs, Alia effortlessly carries each saree with grace, making a fashion statement that perfectly complements the top-notch style Karan Johar’s movies are known for. Manish Malhotra’s fantastic work is evident in each stunning outfit. She looks particularly stunning in the unique pink and black combination, and the white sheer saree adorned with floral embroidery is a trendsetter. Alia’s yellow organza saree with a sleeveless blouse pays homage to classic Bollywood style, and her ability to effortlessly pull off a multi-coloured ensemble reflects her vibrant personality. Lastly, her striking red and gold saree worn during Durga Puja stands out, showcasing a different aesthetic while remaining remarkable in its own right.

Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani at its core is an entertaining love story with a dash of social commentary. It’s a glamorous package that celebrates the complexities of love, family, and societal transformation. As the curtain falls, the film reiterates its ultimate message: it’s all about loving your family, which couldn’t be more quintessential Karan Johar.
