NOSE JOB

Sorry, not talking about any corrective surgery here. What I am going to share is about how you can detoxify your mind and body through a, well, “nosey technique”.

So the “nosey technique” that I am referring to is Nasyam, which is essentially an ayurvedic procedure of administering medication through the nostrils. These medicines are usually in the form of powders and herbs blended in oil. There are several types of Nasyam blends to treat different conditions and need to be administered under the supervision of an ayurvedic physician. I have done the therapy a couple of times – to treat my cold allergy – and was much benefitted from it. However, as I find these oil concoctions too strong and wouldn’t want to mess around with these potent blends by myself; for daily use I simply practice the technique of cleansing the nasal passage with oil.

I prefer to use only cold-pressed natural oils without any medicated herbs or powders or essential oils for my general well-being. Almond, coconut or olive oils are my tried and tested choices. I use almond on days that I want to relax and calm down, coconut on days that I feel under the weather and olive to energise myself.

My intent is primarily detoxification. After a bath I lie down on my bed facing the ceiling. Then I put in a drop of the oil in each nostril and massage the pressure points of the face with the oil. Within a minute the oil enters the mouth. I go and spit it out in the wash basin. For a minute or two phlegm comes up which I keep throwing out. After that I drink a glass of warm water with two drops of Crab Apple Bach Flower Remedy and then do yoga.
On weekends I make an indulgent ritual out of this practice by adding in steam inhalation or just hot compress on the face. This tends to bring out more phlegm and cough but it instantly drains out puffiness from the face, neck, throat and shoulders. I try to have a lot of water and herbal teas, plus I fit in a short afternoon nap. If a nap is not possible, then I turn on some relaxation music on my playlist and practice yog nidra for 15 minutes.

Result:

– Relief from cough and cold
– Throat and chest feels lighter
– No water retention
– Calm
– Energised body and mind

Tip: Avoid cold water immediately after doing the ritual.
