THE BEAUTY CLOSET

A smart guide to things that you should throw, keep, acquire, and use.

Most often our makeup bags and dressing tables are overflowing, yet few of the products lying around are of actual use. It takes a strong heart and some years of experience to throw out what you don’t need and ensure that you have what you require. Being a beauty commentator my dressing table, office drawers, makeup bags have always had things more than I require and indeed it has been an object of envy of most friends and relatives. However, maintaining it has been no easy task because as a makeup lover your heart breaks when you have to part ways with the products that are of no use now. They may have been gorgeous but either they have lost relevance or they have passed their prime. So you but have to part with them and make way for new. Having done this over the years here are some lessons that I have learnt and tricks to help you organize your closet like a pro.

– Clean your dressing table every day, your drawers every fortnight, handbag every month and travel kit two days before each travel. This regular cleaning will help you keep a check on your products and help you remember what you have.

– Throw out what you haven’t used for more than a year. If you haven’t missed it in 12 months, chances are that you won’t use it again.

– Check your products for their expiry date. Do it the way you would for your food labels and medicines. It is essential.

– Keep containers to store similar things. For instance, keep a beaker or a glass for eye pencils and lip pencils, a tray for lipsticks and nail paints and pouches for brushes.

– Your dressing table should always have the following essentials: makeup remover, cottonwool or cleansing pads, toner, moisturiser, sunscreen, lipsticks, kolh pencil, mascara, nail paints, nail paint remover, hair brush, lip balm, tweezer, scissors, nail cutter, nail file, body lotion and perfumes.

– Now if you want to be a pro then you must have the following as well: hair dryer, serum, makeup brushes, lip pencils, eye shadows, face masks and a separate night and day cream.

– Don’t just throw in products into your handbag. Keep a pouch or a zip lock bag to keep things that you may require on the go. And these should include: face wipes, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, 1-2 eye pencils, mascara, tweezer, lip balm, lipstick, hand cream, comb and a 30ml perfume.

– Your travel pouch should always carry your toothbrush, shampoo and conditioner. While everything else can be used from what the hotel offers you, the shampoo and conditioner are important to have your own.

– Your fridge should also help you stock your grooming arsenal. Keep your perfumes, face mists and some delicate lipsticks in the refrigerator.

The way to work this out is to start incorporating each point very gradually. Start organizing little by little and soon you will realise that you have worked out a organizing plans that suits you best.
