DRY VS DEHYDRATED SKIN

People often think that dry and dehydrated skin means the same but they are completely different, Dr Chiranjiv Chhabra explains.

Even though they feel the same and have similar characteristics, they both are different skin concerns having different causes and remedies.

Dry skin

It is a skin type and acquired since birth. Having dry skin means that lack of natural oils or lipids. It is rough, flaky and is unable to retain the required amount of moisture and gets irritated and itchy. Your face, hands and legs appear dry making you feel the need to constantly apply moisturiser or oils. The skin gets tight especially after a shower accompanied by slight scaling or peeling. Sometimes redness may also appear due to itchiness. Fine lines and cracks may also occur.

Dehydrated skin

A condition in which the skin lacks water content and can be experienced by all skin types. It can make your skin feel tight, dry and look dull even after proper use of moisturiser and can simultaneously appear extremely oily. It tends to become extremely sensitive and is often accompanied with accelerated signs of ageing such as wrinkles and sagging skin.

To deal with both these concerns it is essential to make a few simple changes in the skincare regimen.

Remedies for dry skin:

Apart from genes, dry skin is mainly caused by external factors such as steamy showers, harsh water and soaps, low humidity and cool temperatures.

– Applying the correct hydrating serum or oil immediately after a shower is important as it traps the moisture needed. Ingredients such as shea butter, mineral oil and ceramides are highly effective in dealing with dry skin.

– Avoid using too much soap or body wash as these strip the moisture away from the skin. Washing or bathing with hot water should also be avoided as it steals the natural oils of the skin and causes red patches and itchiness. Instead lukewarm water and short shower durations are recommended.

– After bath, just gently pat dry rather than rubbing vigorously. This can further irritate the skin.

– Dry skin is extremely sensitive. Therefore, one should avoid skincare products containing alcohol or artificial fragrances as they can be harsh.

– Always wear lip balm to avoid dry flaky lips.

Remedies for dehydrated skin:

To treat dehydrated skin, it Is important to work on it from inside. While you should treat it like dry skin, a little more effort is needed in tackling the effects of dehydration. Drinking a lot of water is the most essential weapon against such skin condition, in order to keep the skin hydrated and healthy. Adopting a healthy diet will also do the trick. Consume foods that are rich in fatty acids and help in maintaining the hydration.
