RED ALERT

A beauty emergency (like any other emergency) doesn’t spare anyone. The trick is to be prepared, always.

It’s an important day in your calendar – a red carpet event, your best friend’s wedding or perhaps your own wedding – and of course, you need to look your best and you have done your best to look your best. You are perhaps a tad bit over excited. That’s the point. Check yourself at this stage immediately. Take a step back, review what you intend to do and then take a decision. Here are a few points to keep in mind when you are just a few days away from a special day:

  • Don’t try any new treatment like a peel or laser when you are just a week away from the important date
  • Keep your dermatologist, hairstylist and makeup artist on speed dial. If there is an emergency, call them first for advice
  • Unless you have had a fall out with your dermatologist, hair stylist or makeup artist, do not change your specialist just days before the big day. This is really not the time to be adventurous
  • Water is the best medicine. So keep yourself well hydrated when you are approaching an important date. Drinking enough water will keep your system humming and misting your body with a thermal spring water mist will keep your skin hydrated and soothed. Try adding a few drops of Rescue Remedy (it’s a Bach Flower Remedy) to your drinking water and keep sipping it through the day. As the name suggests, this remedy helps you cope better with a stressful situation.

Having said that, if and when an emergency occur, fret not. There is a solution. You can put your best face forward. No one has to know.

PROBLEM: Laser Burn

SOLUTION: A laser burn or a sun burn is like any other burn and its treatment is dependent on the degree of the burn.  Delhi-based dermatologist Dr Varun Katyal explains that usually burns from aesthetic laser treatments are first degree burns. Second degree burns can occur but a third degree burn is unlikely. So if you suspect a laser burn or sunburn, contact your dermat immediately and cool down your skin as soon as you can, this is critical. Don’t apply ice directly. Soak a clean soft cloth in ice-cold water, wring out the excess water and apply it over the burn, when you feel the cloth getting warm, change it. Soak again in cold water and compress. Continue this till you reach you doc. “Don’t do anything else or apply anything else as that can irritate your skin,” cautions Mumbai-based dermatologist Dr Rashmi Shetty.

Dr Shetty suggests, “First apply a calming and hydrating ointment like Dermocalm or Calosoft and then follow it up with steroid cream that your doctor suggests.” Consult your physician and keep spritzing your skin with a soothing mist like Avene Eau Thermale Thermal Spring Water. The brand has done extensive research that proves that the pure water from the thermal spring have fabulous healing properties. In fact, this water is used extensively for treating acute sensitive skin conditions at their Hydrotherapy Center in France. The water contains minerals that help balance the pH level of the skin and reduces any inflammation or irritation.
