COCONUT WONDERS

The world is waking up to it now but for Indians coconut oil has been a go-to fix for decades. Here are 2 hair remedies.

Our current lifestyle involves us using a fair share of chemicals that come in shampoos and conditioners, hair masks, sprays and mousses. Styling and colouring, has a damaging effect on your strands too. Stop hairfall by making the most of coconut oil. An anti-oxidant in nature, it is high on of medium chain triglycerides, or MCTs: main components for promoting healthy hair growth. On top of being antifungal and anti-bacterial in nature, it also has antimicrobial properties, making it a natural fix for scalp infections.

While using it as a part of your regular hair care regime will only reward you, here are two ways to amp this wonder oil to reduce hairfall, get rid of flakes and boost hair growth.

1. To stop hairfall: Strengthen the potency of coconut oil by combining it with other ingredients for excessive hair loss. You may not know this but apart from cooking, curry leaves have medicinal properties such as anti-diabetic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic and is often used in Ayurvedic preparations. A nutrient house full of amino acids, flavonoids, anti-oxidants and Vitamins A,C, and E. Natural beauty expert Suparna Trikha recommends combining equal parts of coconut oil with castor oil and a handful of curry leaves. Simmer for 30 minutes, strain and use. When applying this concoction, seal in the moisture by wrapping it in a hot towel. Take a wet towel and stuff in the microwave for 1 minute (only). Wrap it around your head (like a turban) and keep it on for 30 to 60 minutes; rinse off. Carry on this routine for about a month or two to notice a difference. It’s natural and not heavy on the pocket.

2. To get rid of dandruff: A naturally dry scalp, overactive sebaceous (oil producing) glands can lead to flakes. As you probably already know, dandruff is one of the key causes of hairfall. Get your scalp clear and healthy: coat your scalp with a generous layer of coconut oil and then, massage lemon juice on it. The citric acid that is present in it naturally helps remove the flakes from the follicles. The mixture has an instant acidic reaction and a significant reduction of flakes. And no, it doesn’t sting since you have already coated your hair with coconut oil.
